Definition of love and what are people worth?

C.S. Lewis defined genuine love not as a fleeting emotional feeling, but as a deliberate state of the will and a steady wish for the ultimate good of another person.

This is the definition of love that I used.

Separate issue:

I used to say...

What if everyone on earth is to be treated as (potentially) a beloved child of God. As someone who could be adopted into his household or a member of his kingdom or a beloved member of his family. And what if they could be seen as potential co-heirs with Christ.

But as an abstraction. And only if redeemed. And only if they choose redemption.

And as a model for focusing my thoughts, it's a good one. Because you can see people as valuable. All sorts of people as having value. And basically being sacred just in showing up and being someone who is human and has a soul.

It doesn't mean you have to love them. They might be bad people. But it's a start to thinking.

You can just decide that people have value. And see them as having value. And imagine being their shoes too. And it's helpful. I haven't explained everything yet.

Ummm. To love everyone though? That's a tough one!

Maybe the idea is to become a person more and more characterised by love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self control and faithfulness. As well as trying to have a point of view characterised by compassion.

But universal love is a tough one?

Should we love the cruel and wicked people who engage in massive actions of injustice and exploitation (real person version, not dreg strawman version)?

Or should they be dropped off of a cliff?

We have semi democratic societies? And so why not just do the drop them off of a cliff version?

In the early Christian movement in Rome, they didn't have power to kill the wicked and evil. So they were to love their enemies. But what if you have a moral democracy and have the chance to take out the wicked once and for all? Chuck them in jail until they die of old age.

It's a difficult question.

And then the next question is how about just modify society somehow to make it better? Re engineer it? Use the idea of interlocking systems and create ideas that can go “viral”.
